Overview: (from the back cover)  In One Second After, New York Times bestselling author William R. Forstchen brings us a story which can be all too terrifyingly real. A story in which one man struggles to save his family and his small North Carolina town after America loses a war, in one second, that sends America back to the Dark Ages. A war based upon a weapon, an Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) . . . that may already be in the hands of our enemies.

Months before publication, One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read. It has been discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warned could shatter America. In the tradition of On the BeachFail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future . . . and our end.

Likes: While I normally choose non-fiction books to enjoy, this book was recommended to me by a friend, so I decided to give it a try.  The book was an easy read, in that it flowed well and kept my interest.  While I had been told that this book took much of its subject matter and characters from other previously written books, I personally had not read any of those books, so it was new to me.  I came to care about the characters and although parts of the storyline were very predictable, it kept my interest throughout the book.

Dislikes: The subject matter of the book is a hard one to face.  No one wants to face uncertainty and the inability to care for those we love. Overall, I did not dislike anything about the flow or the way the book was written.

In Closing: One Second After is a book I’d recommend.  It gets you to think about what could happen, and the dire consequences we might face, if some type of EMP event (natural or man-made) happened.  While disturbing to think about, we live in a day and age when this could be a reality.  However you feel about the state of our country, and world events, we all need to be aware of the possibilities of an EMP and what (if anything) we can do about it.
