Overview: Gorilla Baby: The Story of Patty Cake is a true story about the surprise birth of a gorilla baby to Congo and Lulu of the Central Park Zoo in the ’70s. It’s a story told through clear text and startling black and white photographs.
Lulu takes great care of Patty Cake. The baby learns to crawl and climb the bars, but one day when she is about 5 months old there is an accident with Lulu and Congo and Patty Cake breaks her arm. She goes into the hospital for 3 months. The book follows her recovery and reunion with her family.
Likes: I always love books about gorillas, especially true stories.
Dislikes: There were no dislikes about the book.
In Closing: This is an enjoyable book with lovely black and white pictures. Although this is a children’s book, the reader should be aware of the accident with the gorilla baby, as this may upset some children. The black and white pictures are lovely, but I did have a child once tell me that one of the gorillas looked mad, so be ready to explain about gorillas. 😊
